Scratch-build “Shuriken” Quadcopter Version 0.1

Here’s some news on my first multicopter scratch build, aka “The Shuriken”. This is my first multicopter build, and I’m frankly surprised it flies, and flies well! I tried to keep it under $100 USD for the budget-minded maker, but ended up around $150 with all the extra bits.

Bill of materials:

  • 4 x Turnigy L2210 1400kv brushless outrunner ($9.14pc *4 = $36.65)
  • 4 x Hobbyking 25-30A esc ($6.99pc * 4 = $27.96)
  • Multiwii 328P Flight Controller ($27.29)
  • Zippy Flightmax 3S 2200mah Lipo ($13.13)
  • HK Quadcopter power distribution board ($4.09)
  • 4 x 8×4.5 counter rotating propellers ($2.69 x 2 = $5.38) Buy two sets just in case.
  • 3mm MDF board for frame parts (~$10)
  • Pine rectangular wooden dowel, length 1200mm, width 20mm, height 12mm (~$6)
  • Zip Ties $5
  • Foam cones from Kmart $6

    Critique on parts:

  • Battery: go bigger, like 4000mah 30C
  • Frame: use thin fiberglass or something lighter than MDF.
  • Frame: buy the premade one from HK. Cheaper and probably better than you can do at home!
  • The completed quad on the maiden flight. Windy, but handled well.
